Follow one rally

Watch who serves, where the ball bounces and who makes the next mistake. Each pair tries to send back a ball the opponents cannot legally return.

The serve travels diagonally. The receiver must let it bounce; the serving pair must let the return bounce. Then volleys are allowed. A shot out, into the net or left to bounce twice ends the rally.

The kitchen is the non-volley zone: players can enter it, but cannot volley while touching it, including its lines, or let volleying momentum carry them into it. USA Pickleball summary

Why the score sometimes stays still

Only the serving pair scores in side-out scoring. Winning receivers instead move the service sequence onward. Normally both partners serve before a side out gives opponents the serve; the opening turn has only one server. A scoring server switches service courts. There is one serve attempt, not a tennis-style second chance.

Games commonly reach 11, requiring a two-point lead: 11–10 continues. Scoring summary. Explore serving and scoring.

Example: 4–3–2 means serving score, receiving score, second server. Games start 0–0–2.

Best-of-three games to 11 is one sanctioned format; others exist. Winning two games settles that format, without extra time or a shoot-out. Rally scoring is an optional, restricted alternative. Check tournament formats. 2026 rulebook
