Example: a spare ball falls during the score call
A server starts calling the score, then a spare ball falls from their pocket before they serve. The 2025 wording left the meaning of “during play” unclear; it should not be read as affirmative permission for this incident. USA Pickleball identified this exact scenario when approving the clarification. Under the 2026 wording, it is expressly a fault. Official approval record.
Who is affected
This record concerns players administering their own tournament matches. Section 24 is in Part III, which governs tournament play; it contains no age-specific exception for this provision. Do not automatically extend this tournament rule to recreational house rules or independently governed competitions. 2026 rulebook, Section 24.
