Approval and commencement
The World Motor Sport Council approved removal of the fastest-lap point on 17 October 2024, as recorded in the FIA’s official announcement. Formula 1’s contemporary announcement explicitly identifies the 2025 season as the implementation season.
The recorded commencement date, 1 January 2025, follows Article 1.3 of the 2025 Sporting Regulations: the regulations apply throughout their named calendar year. It is not inferred from the PDF’s publication date. The scoring consequence applied at 2025 Grands Prix; approval did not remove the bonus from remaining 2024 races. The cited provisions contain no event-specific early or delayed implementation for this change.
Before and after
Illustrative example: a driver finishes fifth and sets the fastest valid lap in a completed, full-points Grand Prix. Under 2024 Article 6.4, that result earned 11 points: ten for fifth plus one for fastest lap. Following the 2025 deletion, the equivalent result earned 10 points. The constructor likewise lost that additional point.
Under the old rule, an eleventh-place driver setting the fastest lap did not receive the bonus, and it did not pass to the fastest driver within the top ten.
Who is affected and how to use this record
This change concerns FIA Formula One World Championship drivers, constructors and spectators following Grand Prix championship scores. It removes a race bonus; it does not create a Sprint fastest-lap award or establish rules for junior championships or other racing series. See the official 2025-season announcement.
This is a historical 2024-to-2025 change record, not a newly announced 2026 change or a complete current rulebook. For broader explanation, see F1 points and race classification.

| Grand Prix fastest-lap bonus point | One additional point went to the driver setting the race's fastest valid lap and that driver's constructor, provided the driver was classified in the top ten.
