Adopted in 2024, effective in 2025
This is a historical 2024–2025 edition comparison. The ITF’s announcement dated 17 October 2024 reports approval by National Association delegates at the 2024 AGM in Hong Kong and gives 1 January 2025 as commencement. The announcement date is not presented as the voting date. See the official adoption announcement.
General commencement did not require every competition to introduce coaching that day. The official implementation notice directs sanctioning bodies to state their decision and implementation conditions in their regulations.
A practical before-and-after example
Imagine an ordinary singles match between points, outside any approved trial. Under the 2024 baseline, a coach’s discreet tactical hand signal was prohibited. See Rule 30, Case 1 in the ITF’s official 2024 rules extract.
Under the 2025 framework, the same signal can be allowed if the sanctioning body permits off-court coaching and its conditions are met. Advice during the point remains prohibited. See Rule 30 and Appendix IV in the official 2025 rules extract.
Why spectators had already seen coaching
The 2024 temporary variations authorised off-court coaching for WTA, ATP, Grand Slam and ITF events, with ITF Juniors excluded, through the end of 2024. The change therefore established a permanent framework after trials; it did not introduce the practice everywhere for the first time.
Who is affected and what to check
Players, coaches, officials and spectators must check the relevant competition regulations. The sanctioning body decides whether coaching is permitted, eligible coaches, their locations, whether a chair umpire or coaches for both sides are required, and penalties. National-level decisions generally belong to the National Association. See the ITF implementation notice, Appendices A–B.
Do not infer permission for junior, school or club matches from professional events. This record does not establish an implementation date for any individual tour or age group, or audit subsequent editions. For the site’s separate rules overview, see Tennis Coaching and Time Violations.

|---|---|---|
| Off-court coaching becomes a permanent, competition-controlled option | The 2024 baseline prohibited coaching outside specified exceptions: team-captain coaching at designated breaks, coaching during suspended play and separately authorised on-court arrangements. Discreet coaching signals were prohibited by Case 1. However, temporary variations through the end of 2024 already allowed WTA, ATP, Grand Slam and ITF events except ITF Juniors to use off-court coaching. | The 2025 Rule 30 expressly allows sanctioning bodies to permit off-court coaching. Appendix IV regulates timing and communication: never during a point; verbal advice only when coach and player are at the same end; hand signals at permitted times. Coaching must be discreet and, outside breaks in play, brief. Permission is not automatic. |
