A 2025 comparison

Read the left column as NRL 2025 and the right as Super League 2025. This is a historical comparison of selected match procedures, not a statement of current rules or a complete comparison of competition regulations.

The NRL’s 2025 confirmation expressly states that no rule changes were introduced for that Premiership season. Its earlier rulebook must therefore be read alongside the 2024 contested-restart amendment. Super League separately confirmed that the RFL’s 2025 amendments applied to its competition.

The comparison is restricted to regulation play in men’s regular-season matches. It does not establish rules for women’s, junior, community or international matches, or compare finals qualification, competition points or extra-time procedures.

What changes for players and spectators?

After a failed contested drop-out, check the restart location as well as the referee’s decision. The NRL amendment specifies a position measured forward from the kicking line and inward from touch. The RFL amendment uses central marks. In practical terms, teams must organise around different positions even when both competitions award a play-the-ball.

These provisions address particular failures of contested kicks. They do not make every defective restart a play-the-ball, and a 20-metre drop-out should not be confused with a 20-metre optional restart.

The comparison separates competition-specific amendments from international laws. Related explanations of kick-offs and drop-outs and goal-line drop-outs and 20-metre restarts provide background; check their stated editions before applying them to a 2025 domestic match.

Challenges are limited reviews

Neither system gives captains an unrestricted video appeal. The NRL competition interpretations and RFL 2025 amendments both exclude forward-pass decisions and limit unsuccessful challenges. Those similarities help explain why an apparent error may remain outside the challenge process.

For Super League, the documented introduction was expressly tied to televised fixtures with a video referee. Do not transfer that availability automatically to other RFL competitions or matches.
