Approval and commencement
This is a historical 2024 change. The FIBA Central Board approved the 2024 rulebook on 26 April 2024; its stated commencement was 1 October 2024. The official changes booklet was published in August 2024. Publication, approval and commencement are distinct events. See the 2024 rulebook and official changes booklet.
Before and after example
Team A concedes a basket with 1:20 left in the fourth quarter, takes a time-out and elects to advance its throw-in. Under the 2022 edition, it inbounds opposite the scorer’s table. Under the 2024 edition, its coach may choose the table-side frontcourt line instead. This illustrates the provisions in the 2022 rulebook and 2024 change notice.
The choice of side is conditional: advancing a throw-in after a foul or violation preserves its original side. Unsportsmanlike and disqualifying foul restarts remain opposite the scorer’s table unless another rule provides otherwise.
Who is affected and how to use this record
The change affects coaches choosing a restart, players arranging inbound plays and officials administering them. FIBA’s commencement announcement identifies 1 October 2024 as the worldwide commencement of the edition. The sources cited here do not establish a competition-specific early or delayed implementation date.
This comparison covers FIBA five-on-five rules. It does not establish NBA, WNBA, NCAA, 3x3 or modified youth/minibasketball requirements. For a particular age group or competition, check its adopted edition and modifications. This historical entry does not certify the rule currently in force.

| Frontcourt throw-in location after a late-game time-out | With 2:00 or less remaining in the fourth quarter or any overtime, a team entitled to backcourt possession could take a time-out and choose a frontcourt throw-in. The designated frontcourt throw-in line was opposite the scorer’s table. | The same time and possession conditions apply. If the coach advances an endline throw-in following a successful goal or last free throw, the coach chooses either frontcourt throw-in line. Following a foul or violation, an advanced sideline or endline throw-in uses the frontcourt line on the same side as the original throw-in. The coach may still choose to restart in the backcourt. |
