Adoption and implementation

Approved/announced December 21, 2023; applicable in 2024, including spring training and postseason. Field-conversion grace periods existed. MLB notice.

Spring games began February 22; regular-season play began March 20. MLB schedule.

The recorded effective date is a synthesis of those sources: the first scheduled MLB spring game covered by the adoption notice. It is not the announcement date or a claim that every venue completed conversion that day.

Before-and-after example

Illustration: a batter-runner stays on dirt just left of the foul line and impedes the first baseman’s reception. Under 2023, that position could support lane interference. Under 2024, that position alone no longer does. Other interference provisions still matter. Compare 2023, Rule 5.09(a)(11) with 2024, the same provision.

Who should use this record

This historical comparison helps runners, fielders, coaches, umpires and spectators interpret the edition change. It is not a newly announced 2026 change or a current-rule certification. Do not transfer its implementation date to NCAA, NFHS, Little League or another competition without checking that competition’s rules.

Permitted running area approaching first baseDuring the final half of the run, leaving the three-foot lane could produce an out and dead ball if it interfered with receiving the throw. Both feet belonged within the lane or its lines. Exceptions covered avoiding a fielder fielding a batted ball and leaving the lane immediately near first solely to touch the base. The permitted area also includes fair-territory dirt beside the foul line; Rule 2.01(b) specifies an 18–24-inch grass-line offset. Interference remains an umpire judgment, with an out and dead ball for qualifying violations. Avoiding a fielder fielding a batted ball remains excepted. Compliance is assessed after halfway or the throw’s release, whichever is later.
