Historical change and commencement
The December 2024 edition already restricted spin serves experimentally. This record tracks that restriction becoming standing law.
The April 2025 edition explicitly states commencement on 26 April 2025. That enacted text supports confirmed status. The experiment’s scheduled 30 April expiry is not the new law’s commencement date. A separate adoption-meeting date and announcement date are not established here.
Example and scope
Example: a server deliberately spins the shuttle during release, then strikes its base. At a BWF-sanctioned tournament under the December edition, the experimental variation prohibited this. Under the April edition, standing Law 9.1.5 prohibits it; an incorrect service is a fault under Law 13.1.
Players and officials therefore faced continuity in the tournament outcome, with a change in the restriction’s legal status. This historical comparison does not establish local or school competition implementation dates, or certify the latest rules for every event. See serving rules and service faults.

| Spin restriction moves into standing service law | The base provision required first racket contact with the shuttle's base. A separate experimental variation also prohibited adding spin during release at BWF-sanctioned tournaments, with a stated expiry of 30 April 2025. | Law 9.1.5 incorporates the release restriction directly alongside the base-first contact requirement, without an experimental expiry. |
